You must be hearing that Airtel is enabling VoWiFi for Airtel Telecom subscribers with Airtel Broadband subscribers in select circles but what does this mean, what benefits we will get with this. Well let me start from the top, this is a similar technology like VoLTE, VoLTE works on VoIP it means Voice over Internet Protocol, that means your phone calls voice is transmitted thru the internet to the receiver. Previously you must have heard Edge, 2G, 3G, they were analogue methods to make phone calls but because of Jio coming with only 4G VoLTE technology, we cannot make phone calls on Jio on analogue. After Jio VoLTE, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea also came with VoLTE, means Voice over LTE (Internet). VoWiFi is Voice over WiFi (Internet) the major difference to note that you had to depend on cell towers to have uninterrupted phone calls on VoLTE but with VoWiFi you will be able to make calls with a full network of your WiFi. That means if you are not getting proper cellular reception at your home or office but you have VoWiFi enabled handset then you can make calls seamlessly and that is the biggest advantage of this new feature. Some things you have to note to make VoWiFi work in your Smartphone:

a) your Smartphone should be 4g VoLTE compatible

b) You should have a 4G sim card

c) The telecom subscriber must have listed your Smartphone compatibility on their website

d) Your Smartphone vendor should enable your Smartphone for this feature

e) You must be connected with a WiFi to make VoWiFi phone calls

f) You should also enable VoWiFi calling functionality in your Smartphone settings

You will not be charged anything extra if you are already in a plan like unlimited calling, it doesn’t make a difference, and also you don’t get any discounts with this feature. It’s normal like you make a phone call on VoLTE and when you are connected with WiFi then you make phone calls on VoWiFi. Jio also rolling out this feature in select circles in India and you can connect to any WiFi to make VoWiFi phone calls. This functionality will help us to cut the cost of a network booster if we get less cellular reception at home or office. It will overall improve connectivity. It’s going to take time to fully enable this service to all over India with all the telecom subscribers and Smartphones.
